Different Types of Garden Decking

Installing decking in a garden or outdoor area is a brilliant way of transforming the look and function of your space. However, there are a number of varieties of decking to choose from (e.g. plastic, wood, composite) and there is sometimes confusion as to what the differences are. This article will look at the main types of decking and the benefits of each.

Hardwood decking is usually quite visually appealing and preferred because of the natural wood look. However, it can dry out in hot weather, so it does require oiling to prevent it from splintering. If you are looking for a particularly smooth finish you may need to have it professionally installed, as fitting the decking whilst keeping the fixings hidden can be a difficult task. Hardwood isn't necessarily the best solution for balconies as the natural sap within the wood leaches out and can discolour nearby bricks. This obviously isn't an issue if you are looking for a deck within the centre of a garden.

Composite decking is made of recycled hardwood and polymer resin. Unlike softwood, composite decking is low maintenance as it doesn't require annual cleaning. One major benefit of composite decking is that it can be moulded to meet almost any desired spatial conditions. Available in a variety of colours and finishes composite decking is ideal for any outdoor space regardless of size or shape. One disadvantage is that quality composite decking can be expensive, however it will add to the value of your home and some of the best decking companies will offer a 25 year guarantee so you know your decking is going to last.

Plastic decking isn't known for being particularly durable. It tends to expand and contract when the temperature changes and it has been known to creak and groan as it moves. Due to this movement plastic decking needs to be fixed to steel frames which can be very costly. If you are keen to help the environment it is possible to buy recycled plastic decking.

Lots of people opt for softwood decking because they want a natural wood appearance, however softwood decks have been known to become very slippery when wet. Even when the weather is dry algae and mould builds up creating a slimy slippery surface. Washing off the algae is a quick fix but by doing so, you make the timber more moisture-absorbent causing more algae to return. This type of decking needs annual cleaning and treating to keep it looking fresh.

There are lots of options if you are thinking about garden decking. The first thing you should do is consider the space and how much you can afford to spend. Decking varies in cost but you tend to get what you pay for in terms of quality. Decked areas can add to the value of your home so it is something to keep in mind when comparing the cost.

How To Decorate a Small Decking

Although space is at a premium for small decks, there are several things homeowners can do to decorate and outfit the area.

* For the small area between a door and window, place a small planter on a stand to bring the plant higher off the ground. This creates dimension between the door and windows.

* Place a small table with one to four chairs in a corner of the deck instead of in the middle. This keeps the table out of the way when not in use. This prevents people from tripping over the table or chairs.

* Display plants on each end of each step to keep them off the deck itself or use hanging planters from the railing of the deck or the roof.

* Hang small wind chimes from the rafters of the roof. The small wind chime sound will not overpower conversation.

* Hang wooden signs on the wall of the home for decoration on the small deck. Other items include unusual pieces of wood or anything that will withstand the elements.

* Use a fish net attached to an inside corner of the deck. Children's toys or garden accessories can be stored in the fish net and within easy access.

The Benefits of Hiring a Flooring Contractor

First of all let us see when you would actually need a flooring contractor – you might have constructed a new house and have no idea whatsoever about flooring; you might have leased or constructed a large commercial area and you need a good flooring in place, and so on. In other words, a flooring contractor is that professional who can fill in the gaps for you so you can have the best possible deal regarding any type of flooring.

A layperson might not know everything there is to know about flooring. Nonetheless, everybody wants the best that can be bought within their budget. When it comes to commercial flooring the knowledge is further diluted by many factors such as the area is very large, it will be having high traffic/ low traffic, it will be exposed to water/ moisture and so on. Each decision you will have to make will depend on the knowledge you have about the flooring, and the area where it needs to be applied.

The flooring contractor would be the best professional/consultant who can advise you on this matter. Hence, the flooring contractor role is invaluable when you are out to do your best in a commercial outlet. This is the person who can get you the best deals, the best possible options for flooring and also the best labor to do the work. In other words, the flooring contractor is the one person window where you can get all the information you need for your commercial outlet or home flooring without any hassles.

Wood Floor Maintanence Tips

After a wood floor has been installed you will want to protect your investment. Generally speaking, doing so is a relatively easy task that involves cleaning and maintaining your wood-floor on a regular basis. Keep in mind that water is not friends with your wood-floor. As spills or leaks occur, it is best to get them dry as soon as possible. In addition, particles like dirt and dust can act like sandpaper on your new wood floor. It is best to sweep and vacuum the floor often, in order to remove particles from the floor surface and prevent wear and tear.

Should you notice any scuffs, markings, or stains, purchase a professional hardwood floor cleaner to remove the blemish. Prior to initiating a deeper clean, consider the floor's finish and consult with the manufacturer prior to using cleaners and/or waxes. When moving heavy items or furniture, use a dolly to assist you and prevent scratches. Place floor protectors or ventilated rugs (without rubber backing) in high-traffic areas, under furniture, and near wet areas, such as the bathroom sink. With an appropriate amount of care and consideration, a wood floor should last you a lifetime.

Hug a Tree

Every living thing on the planet has a certain quality of life that we can reach out and touch. Others forms of life can touch us as well, when we are receptive to the idea and the process.

Many studies have been done investigating the vibration level of plants. In The Secret Life of Plants we learn that all plants "feel" differently toward different people and events. A plant that fears harm sends out a distress signal that is picked up on a vibration level by other plants in the area. A happy plant will grow stronger and more rapidly. Plants like certain kinds of music.

It is hard for us, as humans, to feel the vibration levels of plants without equipment to do so. There is one major exception. Hugging a tree will get you in touch with one of the deepest and strongest life vibrations known to the plant kingdom.

Pick a tree in the park, or your own backyard, that looks huggable. Notice which side of the tree is warm to the touch, which is cool to the touch. Wrap your arms around the tree, and hold it in a firm embrace. Rest your cheek on the bark. Put your ear to the trunk and listen. What do you hear? Move your awareness to the area of your heart. What connection do you feel, if any? Take your time! Move to the other side of the tree and hug it again. Try other tress.

Damage by Termite

Queen Termite

Owing to their wood-eating habits, many termite species can do great damage to unprotected buildings and other wooden structures. Their habit of remaining concealed often results in their presence being undetected until the timbers are severely damaged and exhibit surface changes. Once termites have entered a building, they do not limit themselves to wood; they also damage paper, cloth, carpets, and other cellulosic materials. Particles taken from soft plastics, plaster, rubber, and sealants such as silicone rubber and acrylics are often employed in construction.

Humans have moved many wood-eating species between continents, but have also caused drastic population decline in others through habitat loss and pesticide application.

Termites are commonly viewed as pests in many countries, because of the damage they can cause to structures and similar nuisances. In April 2011 wood-eating termites were blamed for reportedly consuming more than $220,000 worth of Indian rupee notes.

Precautions:
  • Avoid contact of susceptible timber with ground by using termite-resistant concrete, steel, or masonry foundation with appropriate barriers. Even so, termites are able to bridge these with shelter tubes, and it has been known for termites to chew through piping made of soft plastics and even some metals, such as lead, to exploit moisture. In general, new buildings should be constructed with embedded physical termite barriers so that there are no easy means for termites to gain concealed entry. While barriers of poisoned soil, so-called termite pretreatment, have been in general use since the 1970s, it is preferable that these be used only for existing buildings without effective physical barriers.
  • The intent of termite barriers (whether physical, poisoned soil, or some of the new poisoned plastics) is to prevent the termites from gaining unseen access to structures. In most instances, termites attempting to enter a barriered building will be forced into the less favourable approach of building shelter tubes up the outside walls; thus, they can be clearly visible both to the building occupants and a range of predators.
  • Timber treatment.
  • Termite pre-treatment.
  • Use of timber that is naturally resistant to termites such as Syncarpia glomulifera (Turpentine Tree), Tectona grandis (Teak), Callitris glaucophylla (White Cypress), or one of the sequoias. Note that there is no tree species whose every individual tree yields only timbers that are immune to termite damage, so that even with well-known termite-resistant timber types, there will occasionally be pieces that are attacked.

Vinyl Flooring - Protect From Moisture

Vinyl flooring is usually resistant to moisture. It'll take any number of spills you can imagine and keep on going. The trouble starts when the persistent presence of moisture underneath the floor corrodes the vinyl floor adhesive, causing the edges of the flooring to pull away and possibly causing discoloration and stain rings in your vinyl flooring. This moisture can come from any number of sources; some of them are commonly overlooked by flooring contractors. Installing vinyl flooring should involve thoroughly preparing the concrete subfloor and checking for any water sources that might infiltrate the vinyl flooring.

Installing Vinyl Flooring
Flooring installers check the moisture level of concrete at the time of installation. If the levels are suitable at that time, flooring may be installed. If something were to change (i.e. heavy rains after a long drought season, changing landscaping, inadequate drainage) the home may be subject to vapor emission. You may have even had significant emissions you were unaware of prior to changing the flooring because carpet is porous and absorbs more than vinyl, which is nonporous and traps moisture underneath it. When installing vinyl flooring in a high moisture area, dry the floor first; this may take several days to weeks.

Moisture and Vinyl Adhesive
Purchase a vinyl with built-in mildicides that won't allow mold growth. Buy an adhesive that has a sealant built in, making sure it is compatible to the flooring. If your concrete floor is too damp, consider other flooring options, like tile. You'll usually get the best results from tearing up an existing floor before installing new (and most flooring manufacturers will not honor warranties on material installed over old flooring). However, there are times when it is advisable, for example, to encapsulate old flooring containing asbestos or to add an extra level of moisture protection.

Moisture and Alkalinity
Another important factor that can be overlooked is the concrete's alkalinity. Concrete naturally has a high alkaline content. This isn't something to be concerned about, as the alkaline levels usually drop to acceptable levels over time. Sometimes this drop doesn't occur or doesn't occur soon enough or to the extent needed to protect your vinyl flooring. An alkaline subfloor will attract and trap moisture. This moisture mixed with the alkaline can cause adhesion failure and discoloration. You can test your floor with a pH test kit, similar to the one that's used for swimming pools.

Illegal Logging

The international trade in illegally logged timber is a major problem for the legal timber producing countries, not  only in the developed countries but in the third world countries. Illegal logging has a massive impact on the environment.

When forests are being cut down by illegal loggers it is destroying the eco system, it is also killing of wildlife and their homes.

Many species of Plants are also being destroyed. We also must not forget about the indigenous people of these areas.

In 2003, the deforestation rate in some parts of the Amazon was the second highest ever recorded at 26,000 square kilometres.

Animals like the Orang-utans face the biggest threat of destruction.
This is a species that at one stage had numbers in the hundreds of thousands and it has become one of the most endangered species in the world today because of illegal poaching, logging and man-made forests fires.

Research has released figures to state that over 1.6 billion people are dependent on the forests for their livelihood.

Illegal logging is advancing at very alarming rates. If it continues at current rate of destruction, 96 percent of the remaining forests will be gone by 2022.

The problem of illegal logging stems from weak governing laws over the timber trade. Neither the United States nor Japan has laws which prohibit the import of illegally logged timber. All this encourages these companies to boost profits and continue destroying our precious and necessary forests.

In Europe various groups and organisations have been set up to try and investigate and stop illegal logging.

There is a body called the WWF Illegal Logging Government Barometer which has been set up by the WWF to assess the efforts of the European governments. The organisation implements the EU action plan on Forest Law Enforcement Governance & Trade FLEGT.

This encourages partnerships between European countries to stop illegal logging. The problem must first of all be addressed by the current administration. Governments around the world must stop accepting the import of these illegally logged timbers NOW.

Most of the money made on illegal logging is spent on weapons, drugs, gangs and organised crime.

When there is no demand for illegally logged timber then the supply will stop.

WE MUST WORK TOGETHER TO EDUCATE THE WORLD AND OPEN PEOPLES EYES TO THE WORLD OF ILLEGAL LOGGING BEFORE IT IS REALLY TOO LATE!

Plant a Tree

Together we can reforest our planet by planting three trees for each of the six billion people that now inhabit our earth. If we were to add an additional eighteen billion young trees to the existing numbers, we would put a major dent in pollution.

Tree clean our air, provide homes for animals and birds, help regulate the hydrology of our atmosphere, and provide beauty all around us. Go to your local nursery and ask what trees will do well in your area. Also ask about fruit or nut trees - why not provide yourself with a snack while you help depollute the planets?

While you are at your nursery, ask about the care your tree requires. How often does it need to be watered, and does it need any special plant food? Make a promise to yourself and to the trees you plant to do what it takes to assure their survival.

Plant a tree to celebrate your own birth, the arrival of a little one in your family, a wedding or anniversary - or to remember a loved one that has passed on. Plant a tree on Earth Day, Mother's Day, or Father's Day. Ask your garden center to contact you if it has seasonal trees left over that it wasn't able to sell - sometimes your nursery will be willing to provide free trees if you are willing to do the planting. Ask your city or county where trees are needed in your community, and donate a tree. Make the planting an event - bring your family and friends and provide a picnic lunch.

Flooring Malaysia

Wood flooring is a long-lasting, aesthetically pleasing, and affordable interior floor covering. According to the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA), "In a national survey of real estate agents, 90% said that houses with wood flooring sell faster and for higher prices than houses without wood floors." That being the case, who wouldn't want a wood floor? Prior to racing out and purchasing wood flooring, we need to understand what is available and keep in mind that all wood floors are not created equal. There are three basic types of wood flooring.

[1] Solid Hardwood Flooring
  • It's magical what solid timber flooring can do to any home interior. An instant upgrade of aesthetic, comfort and functionally standards. The unique warm feeling that solid timber can give to the touch is second to none. And it's universal appeal will complement any style of interior designs effortlessly. Solid hardwood flooring - the foundation of an exceptional and tasteful interior. Timber species such as Merbau, Kempas, Teak & Iron Wood widely used at Malaysian home.

[2] Engineered Hardwood Flooring
  • With the natural characteristics and charm of selected natural wood species on the surface layer but even more dimensionally stable construction, engineered hardwood flooring is manufactured to minimise expansion and contraction during seasonal fluctuations in humidity and temperature.

[3] Laminate Flooring
  • The same good looks and appeal of solid timber with a fraction of it's cost, laminate flooring is a true alternative for the more budget conscious.
